Getting started with an AdWords account for an e-commerce business
I’m helping a small e-commerce business set up its first Google AdWords campaign, and they’re looking for resources or tips to get started. They don’t have a big budget and want to ensure their ad spend is optimized from day one. Does anyone have any beginner-friendly resources or advice for setting up an AdWords account, targeting, and budgeting for e-commerce? Appreciate any help!

Great question, John! Setting up an AdWords campaign can be overwhelming, especially for first-timers. Here are a few tips and resources that have helped me get started with smaller clients:

1. Google Ads Help Center: It’s the official guide and has step-by-step instructions for everything from setting up an account to optimizing campaigns. Here’s the link: Google Ads Help Center.

2. Targeting & Keywords: Use Google Keyword Planner to research keywords specific to the products. Make sure you target high-intent keywords but also keep an eye on the cost-per-click (CPC) to stay within your budget.

3. Start Small: Set a low daily budget to test the waters before increasing spend. You’ll want to see what’s working first.

4. Conversion Tracking: It’s essential for e-commerce to set up conversion tracking, so you know which clicks are turning into sales. Google’s conversion tracking guide will walk you through the steps.

John, in addition to what Emily mentioned, it’s important to make sure the ad copy is clear and engaging. Here are a couple of quick tips:

- Focus on benefits, not just features: For example, instead of just saying “Buy XYZ Product,” mention how it helps the customer (e.g., “Save time with XYZ Product”).

- Use urgency: Phrases like “Limited time offer” or “Free shipping today” can drive more clicks and conversions.

For resources, I highly recommend WordStream’s Google Ads Grader. It analyzes your campaigns for free and gives you insights on where to improve.

I’d like to add to what Mei said. Ad copy and landing pages must align for the best conversion rates. If the ad promises a discount, the landing page should immediately show the same offer.

Here’s what’s worked for my clients:
- Landing Page Optimization: Use tools like Unbounce or Instapage to create optimized, high-converting landing pages. Make sure the landing page is mobile-friendly and loads quickly, as most e-commerce traffic tends to come from mobile these days.
- Google Analytics Integration: Set up Google Analytics to track user behavior on your site. It’s great for analyzing which ads are leading to conversions and which aren’t.
